  1. Lenox Glee Club
I think it was the winter of ’62-’63 that Lenox sang jointly with Mt Hermon, Kimbal Union and perhaps a third club under the direction of the director emeritus of the Yale Glee Club (can’t remember his name, but he arranged many black spirituals).

    Questions:
Who was the honored Yale director?
    Who directed the Lenox Club?
Do you have a copy of our recording? Mine melted on a radiator.

Thank you for any and all answers!

David Blanchard was the director of the Lenox Glee Club at the Mt Hermon concert.
I have a copy of the record in a box somewhere: if you have a way to reproduce it to CD I’ll try to find it and send it to you if you will also make a CD of the choir’s ‘Lenox Mass’ at the same time.

A certain nearby authority (and former Lenox faculty member) tells me the Yale director-emeritus may well have been Fenno Heath. A revered name in Yale music, and sounds about right for the time period. Now a related music question: Does anyone know the whereabouts of Bob Ames (Glee Club director late-1950’s)?

The Heath family lived only 3 doors down from me when i was growing up in New Haven, CT. You would always hear wonderful music emanating from the home during the summer months when the windows were open. His daughter Sarah was a childhood friend of mine, so it was interesting to see that Mr. Heath had a connection with Lenox School long before I ever contemplated attending.

Marshall Bartholomew was the Yale Glee Club director emeritus who conducted the joint concert at Mt Hermon in the winter of ’62-’63.

  3. Old choir and glee clug recordings
I was poking around some old boxes and found the original record (in the jacket and sleeve) of the ‘Lenox Mass’ from 1963. I made a cassette of it 15 years ago for the Alumni association, and now I will try to convert it a digital CD for anybody who wants it (if its still in good enough condition to make a good copy). I have offered Rev. Cogan the original.
I also have the glee club record from the winter 1962(?) Mt. Herman concert, which I will also copy and offer to other alumni. If anybody knows how to contact Mr. Blanchard I will offer him the original recording.
Please email me with a mailing address if you’d like a gratis copy of either/both.
    Best regards,
    Bruce Low ’64

Interesting that this just came up… Last weekend my dog club was having a fall luncheon/social thing.. An older member told me that he had an LP of a Lenox School choir recording that he would give to me.. A few days ago he emailed me that what he actually had was the Berkshire Boy Choir.. whuch was a completely different group , not connected with anything in Massachusetts.

    Hi Bruce,
This is John A. Davies, the son of John S. Davies ’64.
My father wrote the Lenox Mass and we actually have about a dozen untouched copies of the ’63 recording. You would think these came from a proud mother who snapped up as many copies as she could. But no, it’s a funny story…
After Lenox, Dad became a professional opera singer and in the 90s was in several productions with the Berkshire Opera Company. For one of these productions, rehersals were held right on the Lenox School Campus! Talk about full circle…
In any event, on one of his off days, Dad was strolling about campus and reminiscing. His wanderings took him into Trinity Episcopal. And what should he find upon entering? In an old box under a sign reading: “Please Help Yourself” were these dozen untouched copies of the composition he’d made 30 years earlier.
So he took the whole bunch. And of course, we have enough of these!
We are very interested though in a copy of the Mt. Herman Concert. Our address is as follows:

Was in choir and gleeclub 1965-68. Some of the consistently good memories. I spent so much extracurricular time singing– and on work squad– that I think Mr. Wood made a decision early on that I wasn’t going to get any serious drama parts, lol. Mr. Demone was one of the more inspiring musical teachers I had during my musical education, and I learned a lot about singing in my 10 years of choir and gleeclub growing up. That experience helped me be the vocalist I am today. Yay Lenox. Non Ministrari Sed Ministrare.
